Stranded mittens with sore thumb and a traditional
mitten shape, knit in decidedly non-traditional yarns, fibers, and colors.
Choose a wool, alpaca, mohair, or blended yarn for maximum warmth and
resilience.
These are a quick and fun knit!
SIZE: S (M, L)
TO FIT: 7.5" (8.25", 9") palm
circumference. If you are between sizes, knit the closer size.
ACTUAL MEASUREMENT: 8.5" (9.25",
10") circumference, and 9.5" (10", 11") long
NEEDLES: 3 (4, 5) US, or size
needed to get gauge.
Pattern may be knit on double
points, a long circular for magic loop, or on 2 circulars.
NOTIONS: stitch marker, waste
yarn, tapestry needle
GAUGE: 28 (26, 24) sts. and 30
(28, 26) rows = 4" in colorwork pattern. Gauge is critical for proper fit!
YARN:
These glorious mittens look great in a variety of yarns. Try them in
a smooth yarn, one with a halo, or a nubbledy tweed. Treat yourself to the
most scrumptious lining yarn you can find.
This pattern requires sport or DK or light worsted weight yarns for the
outer mitten. You will use approx. 125 yards of MC and 40 yards each of 5
CCs. You will need approx. 140 yards of a DK or sport lining yarn, as
well. Choose a plied wool, alpaca, or mohair blend yarn for optimal warmth
and sturdiness.
All samples shown have been knit with one main color and 5 contrast
colors. The chart will show you when to change colors. You do not need to
knit these in 6 colors, however. Two colors will do nicely! I can see
these in black and white, subtle combinations like blue and grey, or a
solid main color with a self-striping contrast yarn.
The tweedy sample pair was knit in Rowan Scottish (formerly Harris)
Tweed DK with color #3 as the MC and colors #11, 17, 19, 15, 18 as
contrast colors. Blue Sky Alpacas’ Brushed Suri in color 904 Fudgesicle
was used for the lining. One skein of each color is sufficient for the
pattern.
The blue and rust pair were knit in Berroco’s Ultra Alpaca Light with
color # 4281 as the main color and , 4240, 4287, 4288, 4285, 4294 as the
contrast colors. Rowan’s Kidsilk Haze in #597 Jelly was held double for
the lining. One skein of each color is sufficient for the pattern.

The pattern is a bit chatty, so should be suitable for an adventurous
beginning colorwork knitter.
